Borki Posted April 4, 2022 Posted April 4, 2022 I mean let’s be real. Axl being trailer trash is the most likely answer. But it’s more fun to say he’s an alien. 1 Quote
wasted Posted April 5, 2022 Posted April 5, 2022 From reading Mick Wall's biography I got that although Axl lived on the wrong side of the river in a lower middle class neighborhood being raised strictly religious and mixing with a small group of older intellectuals introduced him to things early. But it also seems like leading bible class and being the brightest kid at church gave him this cult leader training which translated to leading a band. He's also someone that seems to be looking for something. Being a fanatic of rock n roll was just another religion to him. It's like Axl is doing a comparative religion doctorate. This all probably why they cover The Seeker. I think Axl has become more self aware. Also when Brasky asked why all these talented musicians do heroin, I was going to say that there's a big connection between narcissists and artists but it would be too long winded. A narcissist often has had their self/soul destroyed by abuse. So they create an idealized self to cover up the hole. Artists create things to fill in that hole. Or take a bunch of drugs. The art is part of their personas. They literally recreate their selves every day. So I think that's the similarity between Axl and someone like MJ or all of Hollywood actors, they are constructing new selves with their art to hide the self they are ashamed of. And that creates art or a persona which is very alluring to the media or fans because it's so complex and detailed. It's perfect for obsession. There's this connection between abuse, fame and Hollywood that creates stars and fans. The media feeds the fans/consumers the stories that fuel the fame and sales. The stars or artists are the damaged souls the dream factory runs on. Axl worked too hard for his illusions to throw them all away, right? 1 Quote

The high number of UFO sightings in town when Axl was growing up is interesting. Sympathy for the Devil was on Interview with a Vampire. Axl might be a fallen angel or alien or a vampire. The Bible, the Moon Landing and angels. Need to ramp up the meth. 1 Quote

Borki Posted April 7, 2022 Posted April 7, 2022 Btw the 2011 touring was still billed as CD tour. 2012 I think is when they stopped promoting as a CD tour iirc and instead changed to the Up Close And Personal and Appetite For Democracy, etc. Quote

Even while making what is mostly a Grunge album, they still made something that's more Rock N' Roll and closer to the original GnR than Chinese Democracy Compare to the video for Better 2 Quote
wasted Posted April 12, 2022 Posted April 12, 2022 I think CD has better songs and Contraband has better singles. Fall to Pieces and even Slither made much bigger splashes than Chi dem or Better. I like Suckertrain Blues, I'm pretty sure Izzy wrote it. Loving the Alien is next level. You Got No Right is like something off Lies. There's 5 songs on Contraband that I'd consider for CD. I can't listen Contraband all the way through, there's too much pummeling on side 1 but if you put it on shuffle and get some of those end of album tracks on side 1 it's easier. We got the best of both worlds. Slash doing sexy rock n roll with a singer on drugs and Axl making the Sgt Peppers of Nu Metal. 4 Quote
KillerOnTheLoose Posted April 16, 2022 Posted April 16, 2022 I don't think VR dropping Corey Taylor was about insecurities, I think I agree with Slash on him having the wrong voice and vibe for the band. Corey is a pretty impressive clean singer rangewise but he doesn't have a rock n roll vibe to his voice. It's technically impressive but it's a little too singing-class perfect and he has a hard time interpreting songs by people who had characterful voices. Theres a video of him singing some Bon Shitvi song live on YouTube and he slays it, but that's because Jon has no character to his voice and Corey is free to just tear it up. There are videos of him singing Slither and Running with the Devil - songs by more limited singers who had a lot of personality - and they're basically karaoke performances with less copycat tics. He's like a better version of Myles in that aspect, except less fruity and more 2000s mall metal sounding. Slash likes to work with singers who have a bit of a fruity or effeminate side - besides Myles and Axl, Eric Dover's real voice is clean and sweet, and Rod Jackson could do some of that Marvin Gaye falsetto and the soul singer routine. Corey wouldn't have worked as a frontman for VR where he would be doing sets largely comprised of other people's material as he didn't have enough personality to his voice to stake definitive stamps on them. I'd still like to hear that set of songs they recorded with him though if it ever comes to light, but I feel like there will be some stylistic clash. 1 Quote
ThePurpleLightSaber Posted April 16, 2022 Posted April 16, 2022 I used to think Corey Taylor was doing a Phil Anselmo impression when singing. 1 Quote

He's super into that post Pantera style. His cleans remind me a lot of a blander, perfectionist version of Phil. Also, (back on the fatcast topic) doesn't Perla have Cuban blood? It's possible that she and Frank share a last name because her ancestors owned his during ye olde slavery dayes of Cuba. Or maybe she's got some afro Cuban blood in her and is a distant cousin or something. 1 Quote
