DieselDaisy Posted February 17, 2024 Posted February 17, 2024 Two obscure films from golden age of British horror, The Witches (1966) Starring Joan Fontaine. It is a better film for a view of a lost bucolic class-ridden society and manners - quintessential 'Englishness' - than any sort of horror. It is all very tame! More like a soap opera. A fairly bad film then but Fontaine's star power just about adds some interest. And Soon the Darkness (1970) This is fairly good. Made by the production team behind the TV show The Avengers. The premise is simple. Two hot posh swinging sixties English birds are cycling in rural France on some sort of holiday. One of them disappears and the rest of the film is the other one investigating. Shifty ''French types'' and the language barrier add a sense of helplessness. The use of locations is curious as you have, Village A The scene where the disappearance occurred Village B - more a hamlet really And country roads between those localities. All rustic France. Much of the film consists of her and others going back and forth. Excellent use of location work. I liked this film. It seems that it is completely forgotten. 1 Quote
DieselDaisy Posted February 19, 2024 Posted February 19, 2024 Two English golden age horror, the former is solid, the latter is a bit of a mess, The Devil Rides Out (1968) The Blood on Satan's Claw (1971) 1 Quote
DieselDaisy Posted February 20, 2024 Posted February 20, 2024 The Cruel Sea (1953) Classic stiff upper lip WW2 film. When men were men. Before the Brits transgendered and converted to Jihad. The Innocents (1961) Ambiguity. Subjectivity. Oblique angles. Well before Repulsion and other such films. Remarkably ahead of its time really. If this was French it would be acclaimed as an artsy fartsy masterwork. Quote
DieselDaisy Posted February 21, 2024 Posted February 21, 2024 Magic (1978) Excellent psychological horror. The Hurt Locker (2008) Decent war film Quote
DieselDaisy Posted February 22, 2024 Posted February 22, 2024 Reds (1981) Entertaining epic which manages to transcend affiliations (i.e., communism) of its protagonists into something broader. It does have an irritating side - especially in the beginning. It features the type of people I hate, middle class pseudo-intellectuals thinking they have the correct view on the working classes: the forefathers of the white middle class wokeys really. Five Easy Pieces (1970) Turn Jacky boy on and let him go. There are also themes on class displacement here. Wanderlust - flight really. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011) It is alright. John le Carre adaptation stuffed with British actors. For some reason Gary Oldman plays George Smiley as Prince Charles. Once you pick up on it, you never fail to see ''Prince Charles'' so this is disconcerting. The BBC tv series from 1979 is apparently better. Quote
AxlisOld Posted February 24, 2024 Posted February 24, 2024 Iron Claw. Wow. If there's a god, this family did something to get on his bad side. Good movie, shitty Ric Flair. 1 Quote
DieselDaisy Posted February 24, 2024 Posted February 24, 2024 Obsession (1976) De Palma Vertigo rip/inspiration/homage. It is alright. It gets bogged down a bit. The denouement always needed to be extremely good to justify it but I feel it doesn't quite work. You are sitting there with the knowledge of Vertigo (Kim Novak faked her own death and it was all this big con) throughout, so it becomes a case of: how is De Palma going to subvert Vertigo's denouement (or is he just going to follow it)? WILL (2024) New Belgium (Flemish) holocaust-resistance film just released on Netflix. Rather good. Shows painful decision-making during occupation: resistance v collaboration @booby-doo One of yours? We've got so many great flemish comics with incorrect humour. The 70s, 80s and 90s were our golden age. Nowadays the comic landscape has wokified too. But I have a personal library full of great stuff Quote
MAGATRON Posted February 24, 2024 Posted February 24, 2024 I watched Zodiac for the umpteenth time last weekend. As long as it doesn’t land you in prison, it is good to have an obsession. 1 Quote

Has the style and pacing of a 70’s movie. If you like those other two movies you will almost certainly like Zodiac. I would post more but I wouldn’t want to spoil it for you. 2 Quote

Got about halfway through Hannibal before i had to go to bed. Not nearly as good as SotL, but I still like it. Very over the top but fairly underrated Quote
Johnny Ramone Posted February 25, 2024 Posted February 25, 2024 Silence of the Lambs is a better read than watch, much as I like the movie. Quote

Pretty good Harley Race though The actual wrestling scenes weren't that great. Even MRS DOOM said how shit the guy who played Flair was. The guy who played Fritz was a dead ringer, was a good Harley Race and (correct me if I'm wrong) a decent Bruiser Brody. I enjoyed hearing "Don't Fear The Reaper" at a nice volume at the cinema. I only ever really saw Kerry (on WWF), wasn't until only a couple of years ago I discovered that he only had the one foot! Quote

In 1984 it was known as Fast Times Pt II w/ Chris Penn playing a quite different version of Sean Penn's character "Spicoli" The curiosity of no longer being able to easily watch this film got me once again searching to see if it was uploaded anywhere Internet Fackin' Archive https://archive.org/details/the-wild-life Not the cultural defining comedy of the previous film Fast Times at Ridgemont High, But still worth watching just for the refreshing 80's party culture vibe! Fuck is this? I've never heard of this Quote
Gordon Comstock Posted February 27, 2024 Posted February 27, 2024 Antichrist. A fucked up movie that I've been meaning to watch for a while and finally got around to - it's well done but I don't recommend it. It tries to be deeper than it really is and some parts are over the top, but it works for what it was going for. After that I watched a completely opposite kind of movie: Spaceballs. Quote

Johnny Ramone Posted March 2, 2024 Posted March 2, 2024 The Godfather Saga I’ve never seen this cut of the movie before… 75mims of extra footage. Put in sequence the Vito Corelone back story seems to have less impact than in the regular cut of Godfather 2. Quote
